Yes, you can use scsi drives, but only as external drives, not internal (I don't know if that is what you meant). Generally speaking, you can use any 20 gig scsi drive. I have two, a 7200rpm and a 10,000 rpm, and they work great (No drive busy). There are some drawbacks, mainly that you can't burn a cd from an external drive. You also have to ensure that your scsi chain is terminated properly, or you will get weird results

Thanks Dave, So if I dont use the cdr2 burner to burn cds, then, im ok? I usually mix down to my Marantz 630 via DIGI out. I dont have anything connected right now to the scsi port. a guy is selling a 18 gig Lacie drive for like 135 bucks. Will I be able to still backup from that drive if I connect it in the scsi chain to my VS?

DCMA,Hey, you could go with a 50 gig drive, but you'd only be able to squeeze 16 gigs of useable space out of it because of the os and partitioning. You also need to double check compatibility before installing ANY new drive, no matter the size. If anyone is interested in seeing another artice on Hard Drive Replacement and OS Updating with PICTURES, come visit my site. I just added a VS-1680 section with pages on my mod adventures. It compliments this thread nicely. Come Visit Me at www.deadmetaphores.com -tony [ 11-05-2002: Message edited by: mr. irritating ]

Hi Steve, I notice that at the front of your post you mention the TOMK2016GA as the hard drive to get and later on the next page I think they talk about the MK2018GAP as being okay! Can you still acquire the TOMK2016GA? Assuming that your hard drive works fine, I just want to point out that there is a difference between the two hard drives! (TOMK2016GA and the MK2016GAP) The MK2016GAP is definitely not compatible! http://www.toshiba.com/taissdd/sitemap.shtml [ 12-25-2002: Message edited by: Scoobie Doo ] -------------------- May Gods Peace Be with you!

Steve, is it possible that you made an error listing TOMK2016GAP instead of TOMK2018GAP at the first of this Post? Later in the post people are saying they put in the MK2018GAP! As you know I had to send my MK2016GAP back (wasn't compatible) or maybe it was just a bad drive! I don't know! Has anybody out there put this same drive (MK2016GAP) in their machine? I'm just a bit confused here as to what happened?-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a little information on both drives but as far as I can tell, there is not much difference but there is some to note, one has an "AT4 interface" and the other has an "AT5 interface"! Also the buffer on the MK2018 is twice that of the MK2016GAP! Now I'm not sure but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that a replacement drive had to be AT5 compliant! Not sure about that though! 20GB 2.5" Super Slimline (9.5mm) HDD MK2016GAP (HDD2154) Reaching new heights in technology excellence, Toshiba introduces the MK2016GAP, boasting the highest areal density on the market today. With 17.6 gigabits per square inch on this dual platter drive, Toshiba has once again proved industry leadership and technology expertise. In addition to leading areal densities, this drive also offers a 1,024KB buffer - twice the size of competitive drives 20GB capacity 9.5mm High 13ms Average Seek Time ATA-4 Interface 66.7MB/s Ultra DMA/66 Transfer Rate 1,024KB Buffer 300,000 MTTF Hours 20GB 2.5" Super Slimline (9.5mm) HDD MK2018GAP (HDD2164) Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. (TAIS), Storage Device Division introduces the MK2018GAP 2.5-inch 20GB Hard Disk Drive. The MK2018GAP offers the industries highest areal density per platter, at 35.1gigabits per square inch. This new drive offers enough capacity for portable video recording and editing, with lower power consumption compared to the traditional 3.5-inch HDDs. This functionality provides ideal storage for a range of commercial and consumer notebooks, as well as non-PC applications such as PDAs, printers, copiers, GPS systems and MP3 players. The MK2018GAP is ATA-5 compliant, supporting high transfer rates of up to 100 megabytes per second. 20GB capacity 9.5mm High 13ms Average Seek Time ATA-5 Interface 100MB/sec Transfer Rate 2,048KB Buffer 300,000 MTTF Hours [ 01-15-2003: Message edited by: Scoobie Doo ] -------------------- May Gods Peace Be with you!
